PISCES: Four of Swords

The little lamb in the Four of Swords card is telling you to rest this month, Pisces. You’ve been going non-stop, taking care of business, fighting the battles that have needed to be fought. But there comes a point where you need to give yourself a break and make room in your schedule for some serious self-care. When was the last time you slept in? Got a massage or pedicure? Took a nap in the afternoon? Sipped cocoa on your back porch with a friend? Make sure you are doing the things you need to do to recharge this month or you will start to risk some major burnout. This doesn’t mean checking out forever, but it does mean stepping away for a minute, even (or especially) from the things that seem to need your attention most urgently. It can all wait. Nothing is more important than your well-being. And though it may seem paradoxical, often giving ourselves a time-out can actually lead us to be more productive, or at the very least more engaged and energized. And isn’t that really how you’d like to feel in all you do? Life is way too short for anything else.

ARIES: Nine of Wands

Take a look at your card for the month, Aries. That crescent moon is just sitting there waiting for you to climb up to reach it. What does it represent for you right now? What is it that has been just out of your reach lately? What magical glowing presence is hovering out there that you could tap into, if you only put your mind to it? The Nine of Wands card shows you the path towards your goal, towards that mystery, that thing that has up until now seemed unattainable. What does that path consist of for you? What is the next step that will bring you that much closer to the thing you seek? Your card for August suggests that the answers to these questions will become much clearer over the coming month and you will begin to see with more clarity exactly what you need to do to make your dreams a reality. You might even help things along by creating a vision board or roadmap for yourself, your goal, or project. You can be as creative with this as you’d like and the path can be as concrete or as spiritual as you want. The point is to do your part in manifesting your deepest desires. What would happen if you reached out and touched the moon?

TAURUS: The Hanged Man Rx

My dear Taurus. I now grant you permission to come down from your self-imposed state of martyrdom so that you can join the ranks of the rest of us mortals who are flailing around making mistakes and inadvertently hurting people as hard as we may try not to. You put so much pressure on yourself to do the right thing that sometimes it can end up leaving you paralyzed. When you are so bound to being perfect, you start to lose your freedom of motion which can stifle creativity and precipitate a state of exhaustion and stress that is extremely unhealthy. You don’t need to be the best, or the nicest, or the most successful for people to value you. In fact, they will be so grateful to see you let your guard down a bit, because it will give them permission to be their messy vulnerable selves too. We need more models of imperfection to help us with our lifelong journey towards self-acceptance. Don’t rob your loved ones of that. I promise they will thank you for it.

GEMINI: The Emperor

This month is all about grounding for you, Gemini. The Emperor is as sturdy as they come, his roots growing down deep into the earth. It’s that stability rooted in the earthiness of nature that will let you act from a place of authority and self-trust over the coming month. When you have that kind of strength to draw from, you know that you can withstand whatever winds might come your way. You’ve been through this before and now you know better than ever what you need to do to hold steady. Tap into your deeper self, your connection to the ground beneath you, and the trees around you. On some level, you are as old and wise as the tallest tree in the forest. Call on that knowledge when you need some extra strength or when you feel your sense of self being challenged. You know so much more than you give yourself credit for. Stand tall and remember how deep your roots go.

CANCER: Temperance

It’s back to Temperance again for you, my dear crabs. Remember at the start of the summer when you had all sorts of plans to regain balance, treat yourself gently, and not push yourself to extremes? Well, it’s time to recommit to those goals now. Especially those of you who are in a caregiving, nurturing role or those of you who are feeling the weight of responsibility in other ways. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it as many times as it takes: You do not need to run yourself ragged in order to take good care of the people you love or to fulfill expectations at work. Everything will be fine if you take a break to refill your own cup. It might feel in the moment like you are neglecting others’ needs or shirking responsibility, but you will actually be doing everyone a favor in the long run. Let your children or your coworkers or boss or dog or whoever it is you feel obligated to, let them see what healthy, moderate behavior looks like. This is part of your own healing, but it will help them heal and grow too.

LEO: The Chariot Rx

Happy birthday, Leo… it’s time to relax! Your card for the month ahead is advising you to put the breaks on a bit, instead of charging full-steam ahead as is your custom. Yes, you have goals and plans and you definitely don’t want to lose sight of them, but this might be a good moment to make sure that the route you have planned out is definitely going to get you where you want to go. Is there something you’re forgetting or not taking into account? What is this action going to achieve for you in the long run? Can you foresee your current path taking you to a newfound sense of engagement and possibility? Or will it just end up creating more stress and clutter in your life? If it’s the latter, take some time out to do some revisioning before you set out again. Talk to people you trust, grab a sketchbook and do some diagramming or list-making, revise (or devise) your budget, and never lose sight of the fact that this is your one precious life to live and whatever you do, it should reflect your needs, desires, and passions above all else. No one else can discern this for you and no one can take it away from you. Whatever your dream is, whether it seems bizarre or boring to someone else, if you know it will bring you joy, do it. If you’re not sure, don’t force it. Reassess and the impetus to charge forward will come back around soon enough.

VIRGO: Daughter of Pentacles

What a lovely card for you this month, Virgo. The Daughter of Pentacles is playful, grounded, and sweet. Represented by a young deer, she can be a bit uncertain at times, but it is that uncertainty that helps her to approach situations with equal parts caution and curiosity. She will not boldly jump into a new experience without checking it out first, but on the other hand, everything is new for her so she is constantly exploring and learning. This is your advice for the month ahead, Virgo: There’s no need to be rash or to throw yourself into risky situations that are likely to cause stress and harm in order to push your boundaries and learn something new. Think of some ways that you can push yourself beyond your comfort zone that don’t involve a huge leap of faith. If you’ve always dabbled with watercolors, why not take a class or workshop and deepen your skills? If you play music at home alone, maybe you could consider inviting friends over for a music night? Or maybe you are considering a big change like going back to school. In that case, start with the small steps—requesting information, visiting a campus, speaking with a professor. You don’t have to go all in just yet. Just start somewhere, follow your curiosity, and see where it might lead you. You have nothing to lose!

LIBRA: Three of Pentacles Rx

Your task this month, Libra, is to stop worrying so much about what other people think and just go ahead with your own plans. There’s definitely a lot to be said for teamwork and collaboration, but in some situations it’s really best to just have faith in your own knowledge and expertise, and strike out on your own path. In what ways in your life have you been waiting for approval before moving forward? Where do you defer to your friends, partner, or colleagues when you could actually speak up and take the lead on something yourself? Sometimes the Three of Pentacles reversed can also indicate some kind of hindrance to building a strong foundation, so you might consider where in your life your foundations seem to be faltering. Do you need to strengthen and fortify in certain areas before you can build something stable and long-lasting for yourself? My sense from your card this month is that you already know what you need to do to create a more stable life. You don’t need to look to anyone else to figure it out. You just have to make the commitment to yourself and then do what needs to be done in order to put it into place.

SCORPIO: The Magician

If last month was all about digging in the depths and uncovering hard truths, the good news is that this process has helped you to clear the way for some serious manifestation. The Magician, as the first card in the Major Arcana after the Fool, is all about action and inspiration. Whatever the Magician dreams up can be made into a reality. Notice that all four suits of the tarot are present in this card, representing the four elements and the four areas of life—material, emotions, rational thought, and creativity. Like the Magician, you have all of these tools at your disposal and this month would be an excellent time to make things happen, especially any projects, ideas, or dreams that have been on the back burner or that you haven’t been able to get off the ground in the past. As you’re brainstorming and drawing up your plans, you can call on the Magician to help you manifest whatever it is you’ve been dreaming of. Or if you’re not sure what it is you want, let the Magician help you to take action of some kind so that you can start moving in a direction, even if you don’t know what the “right” direction is. Just doing so will help you to discern what it is you’ve been missing in your life.

SAGITTARIUS: Daughter of Wands Rx

Well, my dear Sagittarius, it turns out that now may not be the time for making any major changes in your life. What if this month you tried letting yourself kick back a little instead of charging forward towards the next adventure like you usually do? Of course there’s nothing wrong with going all out, especially when you’re on the trail of something you are particularly passionate about. The trouble is that doing so all the time causes you to run the risk of burn out, especially during the hot month of August. All that fire can end up being far more destructive than productive right now. I’d advise instead looking for ways to cool and soothe your more fiery tendencies. Find some deep clear mountain pools to swim in or treat yourself to a gelato and a walk around your favorite neighborhood after dark. Go to a movie in the theater and revel in the air-conditioned calm. For once, don’t worry about instigating change and lighting fires of inspiration everywhere you go. Let yourself be receptive to all the world has to offer you.

CAPRICORN: Judgement Rx

What would it mean for you to live a life of non-judgement, Capricorn? What would that look like? How would it change the way you are currently living, how you relate to yourself and others? The Judgement card when reversed (or upside down) at its most literal level is a simple negation of judgement. It can advise holding off on passing judgement when it comes to a certain situation in your life. Or, when taken to its extreme, it can mean reserving all judgement and letting people’s words, actions, and behaviors glide over you without giving in to the urge to criticize or fix them. This is doubly important when it comes to your own thoughts, actions, and behaviors. Often we don’t even realize how often we put ourselves down or tell ourselves we aren’t doing a good enough job—at work, at parenting, at communicating. Whatever it is you are most hard on yourself about, see if you can cultivate a practice of self-love around it by imagining that you are talking to your best friend rather than yourself. How would you speak to your friend in order to be encouraging? You wouldn’t put them down or tell them that they’re never good enough. You should always treat yourself with the same kindness that you do your loved ones. And by curbing your judgements of yourself, you will find that your impulse to judge others will subside as well.

Your card this month, Death reversed, is telling you to take a break from the constant quest for transformation that has put you in such an intense frame of mind lately. Yes, you’re on a soul journey and you’re doing all the right things in terms of diving in deep to your subconscious fears and desires. I promise this will all pay off in the long run as hard as it may feel at times. But for now, at least during these last full weeks of summer, let yourself off the spiritual hook and just be for a little while. You don’t need to read all the latest articles about self-development and you can lighten up on your goal to maintain a disciplined daily meditation practice. The thing is, you’ll transform regardless—you don’t need to put so much pressure on yourself to make it happen right this minute in just the right way. The irony is that sometimes all of our efforts towards self-actualization can start to turn into another thing to excel at and it can become another source of stress. If the point is to gain peace of mind, then at least every once in a while, start by thinking about what truly brings you peace and do that. Sometimes it may not seem like the most spiritual approach, but it just may lead you to enlightenment.
