one is the dark night of the soul, and upon us is the celebration of light: the Winter Solstice. However, it is also in the celebration of the dark that we can better navigate the sometimes blinding light, and the unknown depths of own shadows.
This year, the Winter Solstice (in the northern hemisphere) lands on 12/21, the same day that we are ushered into the astrological sign of Capricorn. This wise and pragmatic sign reminds us to conserve our resources, work hard for what we want, trust the wisdom within, and fill up with faith that there is indeed a light at the end of the tunnel. We are also experiencing the last full moon of the year in the emotional and watery sign of Cancer.
Our intuition is heightened, our bodies want to move slowly and snug up, our minds calm and shift into a creative mode, and our souls yearn for the stillness.
This behavior is seen in nature as trees lose their leaves and animals hunker down and go into hibernation. But as humans participating in the holiday season, we can easily get out of rhythm with nature and ourselves as we RSVP to all the things.
As most of us can’t hide away in our cozy caves this time of year, we can still put on our sequins and celebrate the dark. It just takes a little inspiration and balance—and intentional ritual is the best way to create that.
Winter Solstice Rituals
On 12/21, the sun will be directly over the Tropic of Capricorn at 2:23pm PST. You can practice these rituals at any time on the 21st, at the exact time of the solstice, or within 24 hours of that time. It is more about the action and intention that will help you stir the light within. So if you can’t do anything on the 21st, please don’t feel like you can’t still celebrate and perform one or all of these rituals at a different time.
Reflect on the Dark Night of the Soul
2018 was not an easy year for most people. Not only was it an 11 numerological year (the number of mastery), but we also experienced more planets retrograde than we have in decades. This is no coincidence, because there are none. The 11 year and ALL the retrogrades created an opportunity for us to finally learn the lessons that hold us back, keep us playing small, dim our light, and rob us of our power. We needed to feel like everything was falling apart so that we could choose what subsequently came together. You’re not alone in that. You’re never alone in anything.
So on this dark night, take a pen and paper and write down as many challenges as you can think of that occured in 2018. Don’t think too much, just write. Then, read back over those challenges and say, “Thank you for this lesson!”
It is in the face of fear, doubt, insecurity, financial difficulty, and lack that we realize how resilient we are and how capable we are at handling what comes at us. I’m not going to say you necessarily looked pretty doing it, but I am going to tell you that you DID IT! Reflection is so important to harness your personal power and realize that you are more powerful that you could ever imagine.
Set It Aflame
Yule, the pagan holiday, is celebrated at this time and fire is the element of honoring the light. But it is not only the light we will honor with this flame, it is also the darkness.
That paper you just wrote down all your 2018 challenges on? Set it aflame! (In a fire safe container, please!) You don’t need that shit anymore. You got through you, you’re better for it now, and you are rising like a Phoenix from the ashes at this very moment. Release all that and know that it was absolutely necessary for you to experience. You always have a choice in how you navigate through life. You can choose to see 2018 as an attack on your self (ego) to tear you down, or you can choose to see it as a series of intense exams to help you graduate to the next chapter of your life (Spirit).
The fire is also the glimmer of hope that begins to grow exponentially as the darkness recedes and the light engulfs the land, our hearts, and our souls. Celebrate both, but most of all celebrate YOU!
Celebrate the Dark
Recently on Spirit Guides Radio, we talked with wild woman and author of The Holy Wild. This was no normal podcast, however. Danielle lead us through a ritual storytelling of how to embrace the dark and honor not only what you are but also what you are not. Have a listen to episode 49 and open your heart to the darkness within.
